A woman and her daughter came into the store wearing pajamas. The mom was wearing pj shorts and the daughter, who was like 17, was wearing pj pants with skulls or something on them. And it was like one in the afternoon. Really... what were you thinking when you woke up... "I have to do errands today. And hey, I already have clothes on. Let's go." Crazy people. Put some real clothes on before getting in your car and driving to public stores.
You know that Greek coin necklace things I wear... well I never really knew what the coin was. It turns out that this Indiana Jones-lookalike knew it was a Greek drachma. The customer looked just like Indy, with khaki pants, that white shirt, the hat, and even a leather messenger bag. He was buying Africa travel books and seemed to be very worldly. Anyways, he told me that it was a drachma. When Indy was done, the next person in line walks up to my register and says "Why hello Drachma Queen". What! Weirdo!
I love it when Katie or Denetra go through their food inventory. Whenever they find chocolate, candy, or chips that are past expiration, they put the stuff in the breakroom and we get to eat it! In my fridge, I have bags of raspberry-chocolate balls and chocolate-peanut butter bars!
In a one-week span, three helping dogs-in-training came into the store! They wear little shirts that say "Please don't pet or play with me. I'm working". One customer brought Cosmo to the registers and asked if I could help her train her dog. I rang up her purchase, but rather than her giving me her wallet, she gave Cosmo her wallet to give to me! And I would give Cosmo stuff to give to the woman. Cosmo was SO CUTE! Golden retriever, probably younger than a year old!
When special, popular new books come out, our store is required to do a certain number of customer reserves each day. One day, I did two Lost Symbol reserves and one Diary of a Wimpy Kid reserve. As a reward, Derrick gave me a sheet of Dr. Seuss stickers, a cool Pookie magnet, and a "Where the Wild Things Are" rumpus crown! The magnet and some stickers are on my work locker, and for the rest of the work day, I wore my crown!!! So cool!!
We gift wrap for customers who want their things wrapped, and I've always considered myself a pretty good wrapper. As I was wrapping a book for a customer, he asked me if I was European. When I told him that I wasn't, he explained that he assumed I was because of how well I was wrapping. I never knew Europeans were known for their excellence in the field of gift wrapping.
I consistently love your stories from Borders. I swear I never had this kind of cool stuff happen when I worked retail. Lucky you!
