Not My Family

So at the time when I posted about my sister's arrest, I thought it was absolutely crazy. Sometimes mom and I would make little jokes about it. How were we to know that that would be the start of something horrible.

Kaitlin dropped out of FSU, is living with Jeff in Wellington, and is not talking to anyone, including my parents, me, and some of her closest friends (especially the ones who are friendly with my family). Oh, and Jeff is now a drug dealer.

The last time mom spoke to Kaitlin was this past weekend. They talked about FSU, Mike's new girlfriend, and just average stuff. But lately, all of mom's calls have been going straight to voicemail, and that Kaitlin would never call back. When mom looked at the phone bill, just to make sure the cell was working, she saw that Kaitlin had been talking to Jeff again, even though the lawyers said that interaction with him would mess up their court case.

Mom decided to take a look at recent credit card charges and saw that Kaitlin's account had been making transactions in Wellington/RPB for the last week and a half. This couldn't be right because Kaitlin was supposed to be in Tallahassee. Mom checked on Kaitlin's Sunpass and saw that two days after she moved back to Tallahassee, Kaitlin made a one-way trip back to Wellington. Mom found a check Kaitlin wrote to one of Jeff's roommates with the memo line reading "Rent". After calling FSU, mom learned that Kaitlin dropped all her Fall classes. The whole time mom was talking to Kaitlin about classes, Kaitlin had been lying and actually living in Wellington. With Jeff.

One of the scarest things about this is that Jeff is a drug dealer with an anger problem. He verbally and physically abused Kaitlin in the past, and now she's living with him. She dropped out of school to move back to Wellington so they could be together. If there's ever a drug bust at his apartment and Kaitlin is there, she could be arrested and charged with drug crimes.

Mom and dad are going to go to Jeff's apartment tonight, unannounced, to see if they can talk to Kaitlin. Already, they have cancelled her credit cards, so she can't spend mom and dad's money or her college money. Some recent transactions have been to pay for Jeff's phone bill, clothes, and food. If the "intervention" doesn't go well, mom said that measures will be taken to disown her. Should Kaitlin get in trouble and arrested in drug-related charges, mom and dad want to make sure no one goes after Matt and Mike's college funds.

There is nothing more heartbreaking than hearing your mom cry over the phone, asking if she was a good mother, asking where she went wrong in raising Kaitlin, and asking whether Kaitlin will come back again.

  1. Oh my gosh Nicki, that's terrible. If you ever want to talk or go out for a martini or something let me know! I know your mom is a strong woman and even though this is probably tearing her apart, she and you all, will get through it. Kaitlin is not a stupid girl, she'll snap out of it. Best of luck in the whole ordeal!!! Remember, you can always call!
