We've been doing a book drive for the Ronald McDonald House charity for the past couple of weeks, and I've noticed that people aren't very charitable. When customers come up to pay, I would ask them if they would like to donate a book, and if they do, they would pick out one of the dozens of books we have at the registers (some as cheap as $2.99), pay for it, and I would put it in the donation box. However, sometimes a customer would think I said the word "buck" instead of "book". They would be ok with giving a dollar, but when I told them that they would be picking out a book to buy, they would backpedal and say they couldn't afford a book. Come on, some of these people are spending more than $50 on books... what's another $3. Uggg. I've bought 3 books already, so this is going to count for my August Donation of the Month.
Whenever I work the closing shift, it's always with Marcus (Bookseller) and Derrick (Supervisor). They're both 25 and really cool. Derrick is the one who is trying to break my spirit and make me cry, and Marcus is the one I'm in a contest with to see how many times I can make him laugh. All these factors make the closing hours way too cool for school. One night, they said that if I can come up with a rap, I can do the closing announcement, so for the rest of the night, I tried to come up with a rap....
"Hey Borders shoppers lend me your ear, I've got a message that I'd like you to hear.
The time's 11:00, yeah that's right, this book store's officially closed for the night.
If you wanna buy something go to the front of the store. Our cashier is there to help before you head out the door.
Tomorrow we open out doors at 10. Thanks for shopping at Borders we hope to see you again."
I totally got to rap that over the store's PA system... and there were even customers in the store who go to hear it! If I were working with any other supervisor or manager, I definately would not have been able to do that!
Last night, Derrick tried to throw some huge grasshopper-ish bug on me. But, he was kidding. He was too chicken to touch the bug, but I totally thought he had it cupped in his hands.
I cried at work on Saturday. My co-workers asked how my Friday was (since I had the day off) and I mentioned Allison's going away party. And it was so weird. Like Allison said, when we said goodbye at the party, there were only a few tears. Even that night, I was really sad, but I didn't really cry-cry. But it was when I was in the Borders breakroom, talking to co-workers who had no idea anything about our friendship, did I start to really cry. My eyes were all puffy and customers kept looking at me weird. It was a good thing that Derrick wasn't around while I was crying bc I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing that I do feel sad sometimes and that I'm not always sunshine and rainbows.
I miss you lots and lots and lots already Nicki!
